Unfortunatly it is the only way to get a higher refersh rate on mac as the monitor needs that the extra power from the USB supply. Upon doing some research I found this cable. When I opened system preferences to change the resolution it still only gave me the option of a 60hz refresh rate. When the monitor arrived, I switched my old non-144hz monitor to HDMI and plugged the new one into thunderbolt. I thought this would be as easy as just buying the monitor so I selected this one from amazon. So to start off I am using a Mac Pro and have been using it for gaming for quite some time as well as my other work needs (adobe suite, etc.) Anyway I figured that as I got more into it I would like to add a 144hz monitor to my setup. I thought I would share my experience of how I set a 144hz monitor with my mac.
